Humble Beginnings - It takes a while to get into the game. It takes a lot of movement freedom away from you. Having to zigzag up into the air and try floating can be a major headache. This holds especially true when facing certain bosses. There are too many times I couldn’t avoid attacks because of not being able to dash upwards or downwards. The main issue I had was not being able to go upwards or down. Your attacks lock onto the target once you’ve dashed into them. Zig-Zag - A lot of the combat revolves around dashing. I also didn’t use the customize menu to make the game harder. I didn’t find even half of the emblems and never got a higher score than a B ranking. I was able to obtain all achievements in around 11 hours. There are secret emblems you can collect that help your kudos score as well as unlock songs to play during missions. Besides the main campaign, you can buy abilities, level up, and there are lots of extra modes including boss rush. What to Do - There’s an absolute ton of content within Gunvolt. You use saw blades that circle around you to decimate enemies. My absolute favorite is called Orbital Edge. If you’re not good at switching on the fly, you can simply pause and pick which you want. There are colored orbs that circle you which indicate which power you’re on. What’s really cool is how you can switch them on the fly. Other bosses are weak to certain abilities that you obtain. Mega Man Clone - Love playing games like Mega Man? You’ll probably enjoy this quite a bit. Will it live up to Mega Man or just be a failed attempt to mimic the genre? You have an ultimate ability that destroys anything in your path. The missions are pretty easy the bosses are where the real challenge lies. You have a gun but you’ll be dashing into enemies a lot doing massive damage with your abilities. There is a whole bunch of content to unlock and several missions. It looks fairly retro and the artwork is nicely done. Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX is a 2D side-scrolling action platformer. After defeating a boss, you gain the power that can then be used whenever you want. Nonetheless, if you’re looking for a fix of fast, addictive 2D action, you’ll get it with this title.Copen has a similar ability to Mega Man. I also would have liked to see more incentives for replays, be they unlockable art assets, costumes, or what have you. It is frustrating that the level design and aesthetics are so uninspired if they were at the level of the rest of the game this would be a 9/10, possibly even higher. In the end, I think Luminous Avenger iX is a stellar 2D action game, one that I don’t see many genre enthusiasts disliking. You can also go after higher level ranks, which requires mastery of the mechanics. After completing the main story, you are offered a few new stages to play through at an enhanced difficulty, though all levels and enemies are recycled from the primary set. Voice acting is in Japanese, and is serviceable, but not great. The music is largely forgettable, too, which is a shame for an entry in a genre that is home to some of the all-time classic bangers. Stages are about as bland as possible, both visually and in their design, and it’s a little baffling that the developer hasn’t made any improvements in this regard over the years. I wish I could say the same for the environments, but this is sadly one area where Inti has consistently unimpressed. The anime character designs are another highlight, with bosses and the group of protagonists all bursting with color and style. I do take issue with the lack of eight way directional dashing, as there are times when a vertical dash is ideal, but you can only dash upward at an angle. It all feels great, and controls are (mostly) precise and responsive. Together with the various “EX” attacks you acquire, your goal is to speed through each stage, touching the ground as little as possible and finishing baddies with EX attacks in the air. This so-called “Bullit Dash” is the foundation of movement and combat, allowing you to lock onto enemies and chain together kill combos. Copen, the main character, is a pinball of destruction, dash-bumping from enemy to enemy and draining their life bars with wicked haste. As far as gameplay goes, I think it’s one of the team’s best. I’ve played some of their recent output, and just had the pleasure of running through Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX. 3h 48m PlayedInti Creates has risen to become one of the finest purveyors of 2D action games in the business.
